City of Clayton
Our Exceptional Clayton
City of Clayton was founded by Joel Henry Clayton in 1857. Our city is a very special place, with exceptional
people who have a deep appreciation for the community's history, tradition and volunteerism. Nestled at the bucolic base of
picturesque Mt. Diablo, Clayton is in close proximity to the greater San Francisco Bay Area with all the amenities, sports and cultural
opportunities offered by that choice location.
Clayton is a safe residential community of 10,900 people. It is a town which values civic partnership with business leaders,
community leaders and our neighbors. Claytonians turn out in high numbers to celebrate the annual
family-friendly festivities such as the Art and Wine Festival, our homespun 4th of July parade, the Oktoberfest celebration, and the
popular farmer's market and concerts in The Grove Series in our beautiful Downtown Park. Whether you're a first time visitor to
Clayton, long-time resident, or are considering moving here to reside, raise a family or open a business, you are sure to fall in love
with our little city.
Clayton boasts distinguished elementary and middle schools, and maps to the recently converted Clayton Valley Charter High
School. Clayton is a "fit" community with terrific Oakhurst Country Club and golf course, fabulous restaurants and shops, newly built
bocce courts downtown, hiking and biking trails, Mt. Diablo State Park and award winning Public Library. This gem of a City is the
perfect place to call home!
